“Every three to five years” is the county's answer and a good one. But the difference between three and five is a garbage disposal, two extra people, and a tank that was undersized to begin with. Here's how to know which end you're on.

Why the interval exists at all
A septic tank does one job: it holds wastewater still long enough for solids to sink and grease to float, so that only relatively clear liquid leaves for the drain field. The sludge on the bottom and the scum on top build up slowly and permanently — bacteria break some of it down, but never all of it. As the layers thicken, the tank has less room to do its settling, and eventually solids start leaving with the liquid. The drain field is not built to take solids. Once they arrive, they clog the soil, and the field — the expensive half of the system — begins to fail.
Pumping resets the clock. The interval is simply how long your household takes to fill the tank's solids capacity back up to the point where solids start escaping.
The county's number, and what moves it

Toward more often
- People. Solids accumulate per person. A tank sized for a three-bedroom house with six people in it fills roughly twice as fast as the same house with three.
- A garbage disposal. Every scrap that goes down the disposal is a solid the tank has to hold. Disposal households typically need to pump noticeably more often — the single biggest controllable factor.
- A small or old tank. Older rural parcels around Exeter, Porterville and the unincorporated fringe sometimes have tanks far smaller than a modern house needs. If nobody knows the tank's size, the first pump-out will tell you.

Keep the receipt, the measured depths, and the date. The next owner — or you, in four years — will not remember.
Signs you've already waited too long
Slow drains and gurgling across the whole house, a sewage smell near the lids, a wet or unusually green patch over the drain field, or — the sign you'll never see yourself — liquid running back into the tank from the field after a pump-out. A house that sits empty part of the year
A seasonal or second home on a foothill parcel near Exeter or up toward Springville accumulates solids only while someone is there. Count occupied months, not calendar years — but don't let a rarely-used tank go unlooked-at for a decade either, because baffles and lids deteriorate whether or not anyone is flushing.
A rental or a property you just bought
Tenants don't track pump-outs and sellers rarely hand over the receipts. Treat the first year as unknown: schedule a pump-out with a sludge measurement and a real inspection, then set the interval from what the pumper finds rather than from what the previous owner said.
An added unit or a bigger household
A converted garage, a second unit, or two more adults in the house changes the load on a tank that was sized for the original floor plan. The tank doesn't get bigger; the interval has to get shorter. If the increase is permanent and large, the honest question is whether the system is now undersized — a county-review question, not a pumping one.
Between pump-outs: the habits that stretch the interval
- Nothing but wastewater and toilet paper down the drains — no wipes (including "flushable"), no grease, no coffee grounds, no cat litter, no paint or solvent.
- Spread laundry across the week rather than one marathon day, so the tank isn't flooded.
- Fix running toilets and dripping fixtures; a running toilet alone can push hundreds of gallons a day through the tank.
- Keep vehicles, equipment and structures off the tank and the field.
- Install risers on the lids if you don't have them — it turns every future service from a dig into a lift.
